SIAST Early Childhood Education – Orientation

Start your career in Early Childhood Education.

The SIAST Early Childhood Education Orientation is an introductory course that provides the minimum training required by Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education in order to work as a child daycare worker. Level I has an emphasis on the content and best practices in three core areas of child guidance, play and exploration and health, safety and nutrition. It also incorporates the Ministry’s Play and Exploration Early Learning Program Guide, the curriculum framework for all early childhood programs in the province. This program is offered by facilitated study and the majority of the course will be done by the individual on his/her own.

Rhonda Berard

Rhonda has a dual degree in Psychology and Sociology. For over the past 12 years she has worked in community development with a major focus being in the area of Early Learning. Since 2002 she has been working as a Supervisor with the KidsFirst program and has instructed the ECE Orientation Class at Parkland College since 2006.

The Orientation program is the first step in your career as an Early Childhood Educator. Parkland College offers several more options in this field that may enhance your employability. These certificates and/or diplomas can add to your existing credentials and prepare you for the world of work. Qualified graduates may be able to apply some academic credits towards further study. Career Opportunities

If you’re interested in working as a child daycare worker, the Orientation program is the first step in your career as an Early Childhood Educator. Graduates may work in group care or education settings with children from birth to age 12. These settings include:

  • child care centres
  • pre-school centers
  • schools
  • family day homes
  • private homes

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 10

Important Notes:

  • If you successfully complete the Early Childhood Education Orientation and are admitted into the Early Childhood Education Certificate program, you may apply for transfer credit for Child Guidance 1 (HUMD 183), Health, Safety and Nutrition (ECE 142), and Role of Play (ECE 106).
