Parkland College earns national award for excellence in indigenous education

May 10th, 2019

Parkland College has been selected for a national award recognizing its achievements in indigenous education.

Parkland College won the Silver Award for Indigenous Education Excellence at the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) annual conference this week. NorQuest College (Edmonton) was chosen for the gold, while Algonquin College (Ottawa) took the bronze.

Parkland College serves over 6,000 students in rural Saskatchewan with 43 per cent identifying as Indigenous. The College works with 11 First Nations communities and two tribal councils in the Parkland region.

“Our commitment to these students and communities is embodied in our strategic plan, shaped as a medicine wheel with indigenization embedded in every priority,” said Interim CEO Kami DePape. “The College’s governance structure, partnerships, student supports, curriculum, and learning environments focus on providing training success and labour market engagement for our Indigenous learners and communities.”

The CICan Awards of Excellence recognize best practices at institutions across the country. There are eight categories for excellence in leadership, indigenous education, internationalization, applied research, and general program achievements.

“Colleges and institutes are so successful thanks to passionate staff, teachers, researchers and administrators who work tirelessly to provide students with the skills and experience they need to succeed”, said Denise Amyot, President and CEO of CICan. “Every year, the CICan Awards of Excellence recognize these dedicated people who go above and beyond to make Canada’s post-secondary education the best in the world.”
