Season’s Greetings

December 20th, 2016

“Are you ready for Christmas?”

I am not sure how many times I have heard this question asked in the past few weeks but I know it is a common inquiry at this time of year. It usually refers to the myriad of tasks that accompany the season and all that is required to prepare for the many festive occasions on our calendars. Invariably, some people are ready, others have a few things to do, and still others have not yet started.

Well, I am ready for Christmas! I know there are a few tasks to complete and they will get done. I am ready though from a different perspective. While I know this is not universal, I have come to appreciate the peace and tranquility that surrounds the season. Many mornings and nights over the past weeks, I have taken a few moments to sit in our front room and admire our Christmas decorations and our tree. We have decorated our tree with the usual ornaments, but also have a tradition of purchasing a decoration from our holiday destinations over the years.

I look at a bear ornament from Waskesiu and I think of the wonderful family trips we made over the years from the time our children were young through the teenage years and into adulthood. I recall the trips to the ice cream store, the time on the beach, the paddle wheel ride.

I see a snowman we bought in Montreal and I remember the horse-and-carriage guided tour we took with my parents. I think back to riding through old Montreal and how my dad marveled at the ability of the horse to navigate the busy and loud streets.

I look at the miniature façade of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and I think of the special December trip I took with my wife a few years ago to enjoy the sounds of Music City and the unbelievable Christmas decorations at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

We are fortunate. Our decorations and our tree carry some very special memories and the Christmas season brings these meaningful memories to life.

So, yes, I am ready for Christmas! I am ready for the peace and joy that accompanies the season. I am ready for the memories, the smiles, the hugs, the laughter, and the love brought on by this special time of year.

May your holidays be full of wonder and joy. Merry Christmas from the Reeve family!
