‘Tis the Season

December 21st, 2015

Christmas and all that surrounds it has always been a special time for my family. I am not sure if I could point to any one element that makes the season so memorable.  There are so many little events that combine to make the season a wondrous time. In years past, we enjoyed the season through the excitement of our children. The trips to sit on Santa’s knee, the carol festivals, the school concerts, and the joy of shopping for mom’s special present all evoked responses that are now somewhat distant but still etched in our memory.

Now that our children are adults, the events are different but the memories are as strong as ever. The sharing of a special recipe so a long-standing family tradition can be maintained, the visits to our children’s homes to see their decorations and help them hang Christmas lights, and the gift exchanges are all creating new and very meaningful memories.

Whatever your plans are for the Christmas season, I hope you are able to find time to reflect on the events so they can be committed to memory for future reminiscing. Last year, I had the chance to speak to someone who kept a Christmas journal. Each year, this person takes some time during the holidays to sit down and record the experience so they can relive the past and share it with others. The collection of anecdotes has become a family treasure that I am certain will outlive the author. I expect someone will take up the challenge and carry on the tradition when it is time.

The Reeve family extends season’s greetings to the students and staff at Parkland College and to all of our many partners who support our work.  I hope you find time to create some memories that will endure. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
